'리와인드 구마모토'는 작가 장지원이 아버지의 젊었을 적 사진을 보고 흥미를 느껴 그 장소에 다시 찾아가 보고 들은 점을 바탕으로 한 책이다. 우연한 계기로 아버지가 반평생 찍었던 필름 사진들을 복원하다 발견한 일본 시골 마을의 풍경은 작가의 호기심을 불러일으켰다. 그것은 1991년 당시 아버지가 일본 구마모토의 한 농촌 가정에 홈스테이를 다녀온 사진들이었다.

아버지는 당시 받았던 환대를 여실히 기억하였으나, 어느새 세월이 지나 연락처와 주소도 잊어버려 안부 한번 전하지 못한 것에 대해 미안한 감정을 가지고 있었다. 그런 아버지의 감정과 낯선 이국의 풍경이 작가를 구마모토로 이끌었다. 바이크를 타고 구마모토로 향하던 길에는 구마모토 대지진이 일어나 대부분의 도로가 폐쇄되었으나, 길에서 마주친 많은 사람들이 통행이 가능한 길을 알려주며 여정을 응원해 주었다. 그렇게 작가는 해당 가정을 찾아 25년 만의 안부를 전했으며, 작가는 당시 아버지의 시선을 상상하며 아버지의 사진과 같은 장소에서 같은 구도로 사진을 찍었다.

일본 가족 외에도 아버지의 사진 속 마을과 구마모토 시내, 구마모토성, 미나마타, 이즈미 등 일본 규슈의 변화 역시 눈여겨보며, 아버지가 한때 머물렀던 장소에 도달하여 현재 모습을 기록했다. 이러한 지점에서 '리와인드 구마모토'는 어떻게 사진을 통해 미시적인 개인사와 거시적인 시대상이 맞물릴 수 있는지 질문한다. 과거의 사진 매체와 동시대 언어들의 접점을 찾으려는 시도이기도 하다.

‘Re-wind Kumamoto’ is a book based on the personal story of an artist ‘Jang Ji-won’, who has interested in his father’s old photographic films. The book contains what he saw and heard when he visited the places in father’s pictures. He stumbled upon the landscape of the countryside in Japan while restoring film photos taken by his father and it piqued his curiosity. The photos were from 1991 when his father took homestay at a rural area in Kumamoto, Japan.

His father clearly remembers the hospitality he received at the time. However, he was regretful that he couldn’t send his regards because he has lost the contact and address as time passed. That emotional response from his father and unfamiliar foreign landscapes led the artist to Kumamoto. On the way to Kumamoto by his own motorcycle, most of the roads were destroyed due to 2016 Kumamoto Earthquake, but many locals whom he met on the road walk him through the available way and cheered for his journey. As a result, the artist achieved to visit the homestay family and sent his regards in 25 years instead of his father. The artist imagined his father's viewpoint at the time and took pictures in the same composition in the same place as his father's old pictures.

Moreover, he paid attention not only to the transitions of villages in his father's picture but also the other areas of Kyushu, Japan, such as downtown of Kumamoto, Kumamoto Castle, Minamata, and Izumi. He reached the place where his father stayed for a while and recorded present phase. At this point, ‘Re-wind Kumamoto’ asks how microscopic personal history and macroscopic general history can be interconnected through photography. It is also an attempt to find connection between past photographic media and contemporary languages.


It is intended to tell a unified story that combines personal and universal history, individual and general, and differences between generations and countries through the characteristics of photograph where objectivity is important, such as reporting and factual records, and contemporary languages that reveal, remember, and edit personal history. Based on the world has been shaped through numerous ordinary figures such as his father and the Japanese homestay family, ‘Re-wind Kumamoto’ asks us what is more important to resolve the conflicts between generations and countries that are increasingly intensifying in these days.

Hope that this book and music, which try to wind and rewind time with confronted languages as Korean and Japanese, pictures of father and son, and A and B sides of cassette tapes, would be an opportunity for the readers who always have to rush for their life to re-wind their own lifetime.
